July 30, 2024, The Darkest Chapter in the history of Kerala.
On this fateful day, the serene landscapes of Wayanad were shattered by devastating landslides triggered by relentless heavy rainfall. The calamity struck with full force in Chooralmala, Attamala, and Mundakai, leveling the villages and leaving an indelible scar on the district. Nearly 5,000 lives were profoundly affected, and tragically, 436 individuals lost their lives. For the survivors, the disaster claimed more than just homes and possessions—it stole their dreams, livelihoods, and, most heartbreakingly, their loved ones.
In response to this immense tragedy, the Philokalia Foundation has stepped forward with compassion and resolve to help rebuild lives. The foundation has already laid the cornerstone for new homes across various parts of Wayanad. Several houses have been completed and handed over to the affected families, offering them a fresh start.
The handover ceremonies, led by the foundation’s founder and co-founder, Mr. Mario Joseph and Mrs. Gigi Mario, took place on August 7, 2024, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the beginning of a new chapter for the victims of this catastrophic event.
On December 5, 2024, a prestigious ceremony marked the inauguration of four homes in Perikkalur, Wayanad district. Honorable MLA Sri I.C. Balakrishnan, Panchayat President Sri Vijayan, St. George Church Vicar Rev. Fr. George, Panchayat Member and Standing Committee Chairman, and various political leaders graced the occasion.
